Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Valkyrie Emergency Fresh Whole Blood Transfusion Training Program?

The Valkyrie Training Program is robust training curriculum created to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for a combat medic or corpsman to safely collect and transfuse whole blood in an emergency during combat operations.

How do I access the training materials?

Students may download the didactic presentations from our website here.

Valkyrie Instructors and Administrators of Designated Training Programs may download the materials from within our training management portal here (registration required).

What IS a DESIGNATED training program?

Designated training programs are flagship training intended to produce enterprise-wide recognized graduates and instructors.  This effort to improve safety and standardization was launched in November 2023.

What ARE THE BENEFITS OF OPERATING a DESIGNATED training program?

In addition to creating recognized instructors, DTPs benefit from access to our training management system.

The training management system provides a platform for course scheduling, student management, and access to training resources and instructor materials.

Additionally, our integrated safety reporting feature enhances leadership’s ability to identify and address potential hazards.

Finally, our comprehensive reporting system allows leaders to view student end-of-course critiques across time and develop quality assurance and process improvement initiatives.

What is required to establish a designated training program?

Establishing a training program requires:

1.        Medical Direction – Leadership from a licensed physician who agrees to provide supervision and expertise to program leaders.

2.        Program Leaders – Typically an officer and enlisted leadership team. These individuals are trained Valkyrie Instructors.  The Medical Director sometimes acts as the Program Director, or have another individual fill this role.

3.        A commitment to use the training program as intended. This particularly applies to our safety protocols.

What does this program cost?

We make the curriculum freely available to all US military personnel. Training equipment and consumables are not included and may be purchased through multiple third party vendors.

How long does the training take?

A typical course runs about 3.5 days.  This includes 6-8 hours of didactic instruction, demonstrations, live labs, and practical application scenarios of escalating complexity that are designed to reinforce the key enabling learning objectives in the didactic materials.

Does the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve of the use of emergency fresh whole blood?

No. The use of emergency use whole blood is not permitted in the continental United States. However, this practice is accepted outside the US by military units operating in circumstances with limited access to FDA-approved blood products.
Our curriculum is intended to empower deploying military units with the knowledge and skills to collect and transfuse blood in emergency circumstances and when FDA-approved blood products are not available.

How is Valkyrie funded and operated?

We are funded by private donors and operated by a team of volunteers that believe in the importance of quality whole blood training for our forces.
